George Abbot House
56 Central Street
_______________________________

Built around 1796, this house belonged to George Abbot, known as "George the emigrant". The original home built on this land was conveyed from Richard Sutton to George Abbot, in 1663. The house was built in 1704, but razed in 1862. George Abbot moved to the South Parish sometime before 1676 and built a house just next to this Garrison. It was in the area between the two homes on Central Street that his sons were attacked by Indians. Son Joseph was killed and thirteen year old son Timothy was captured and kept in an Indian Village for some time before he was returned to his family.
The current home is believed to have been built by George Abbot's grandson, also named George Abbot. The home has stayed in the Abbot family for at least 8 generations. The historical sign on the front of the house reads "John Abbot House"
