Newspaper articles
from 1853 to 1859

The following articles are from the Andover Advertiser newspaper, and are the earliest papers on microfilm in Andover. In contrast to the later paper, The Andover Townsman, The Advertiser is geared more toward agricultural interests such as "how to keep maggots off your lettuce" and "the best ways to reduce the flea population on your cattle"....I'm not kidding.....There are, however, still some wonderful gems of genealogical information in the paper. As always there are vital records and real estate notices. The "HEADLINES" are not as compelling. Again, headlines are more about growing fantastic peaches than anything else. The paper excludes birth notices and also lacks actual obituaries, though there are plenty of death notices to go around. I note that the description of accidental, or sometimes intentional deaths, are somewhat more graphic in these pages than in the later papers.
Again, the stories I have chosen to transcribe are here merely by chance. They were chosen at random, to give a good cross section of Andover society. You'll find much about the Abbott's and other long time Andover families. And also a little bit of fun with pigs and chicken eggs !
